Hallstatt, Austria

Hallstatt is a small village beside Hallstätter See (a lake) in the Salzkammergut, in Austria. It is not only picturesque but also famous for its history. Hallstatt is known for its production of salt, dating back to prehistoric times, and gave its name to the Hallstatt culture, a culture often linked to Celtic, Proto-Celtic, and pre-Illyrian peoples in Early Iron Age Europe. Some of the earliest archaeological evidence for the Celts was found in Hallstatt.

Before your journey

You can go to Hallstatt and get back by train from both Vienna and Salzburg. Because I decided to go to Hallstatt while I am visiting Vienna and I live in Germany so my route is Vienna – Hallstatt – Salzburg.
Please note that you should buy train ticket asap on oebb.at because price of ticket may increase up to 50€/turn. Print or let your e-ticket in your smartphone. Don’t be surprised that there is a lack of information in your ticket. You have to note timetable of your train from the website.

On your journey

Hallstatt train station is small and next to the lake so it will be easier to use ferry service to go to Hallstatt Markt. It takes 2.5€/turn.

From the wharf (Hallstatt Markt), if you turn right, you will get to the white church and there is a small path for hiking the mountain (it leads to salt mine). If you turn left, it will lead to Hallstatt information station and cable cars station (it also leads to salt mine). There will be many shops, stores and nice landscapes if you turn left.

At the Hallstatt information station, you can ask the way to visit other places near Hallstatt (Ice Cave Tours for instance). You also can get free booklets there and special voucher. Price of Salt Mine Tour around 40€ and it includes cable cars (2 turns), sky deck and salt mine tour (and one free gift from the tour – salt from salt rocks in mine). With the voucher, price of the tour will be reduce 2€ (or 3€ for students – you have to present your student card at cable cars station).
